Heater marketing loves the word efficient. The honest way to shop is to do the arithmetic yourself, because the calculation is simple, it takes two minutes, and it kills most of the claims in the category before you spend anything.
The formula has three numbers
Watts divided by 1000 gives kilowatts. Kilowatts times hours gives kilowatt-hours. Kilowatt-hours times your rate gives dollars. That is all of it, and it works for every electric heater ever built, at any price.
Find your actual rate, not the average
The number you want is on the bill: total charges divided by kilowatt-hours used, which includes delivery and fees. That figure runs roughly eleven cents in some states and above thirty in others. Wattage is printed on every unit, including everything in a lineup like Reaks, so the only variable is you.
Run the numbers for a real evening
A 1500-watt heater is 1.5 kilowatts. Four hours in the evening is 6 kilowatt-hours. At eighteen cents, that evening costs about a dollar and eight cents. Every night for a month is roughly thirty-two dollars, for one room.
Every electric heater is the same efficiency
This is the part the ads avoid. Resistance heating converts essentially all of the electricity into heat, so a 1500-watt ceramic unit and a 1500-watt oil-filled unit produce the same heat per hour. Price buys controls, safety, and how the heat is delivered, not more warmth per watt.
Where the savings actually come from
- Running fewer hours, which a timer and a thermostat enforce.
- Running at 750 watts instead of 1500 in a small sealed room.
- Heating one occupied room instead of an empty hallway.
- Sealing the room so the heat you paid for stays put.
- Warming the bed at night instead of the whole bedroom.
Compare it to what you already pay
Your furnace or heat pump is likely cheaper per unit of heat, especially a heat pump, which moves heat rather than making it. A space heater wins only when it lets you leave the rest of the house cooler. If the thermostat does not come down, you pay twice.
The bedding comparison is not close
A heated mattress pad in the range of 80 to 180 watts costs a few cents a night. Eight hours at 100 watts is 0.8 kilowatt-hours, well under twenty cents in most states. That is the cheapest warmth in the house.
Watch the thermostat, not the dial
A heater with a real thermostat cycles off once the room reaches temperature, so it does not draw full power all hour. Estimating cost at full wattage is the pessimistic case, and the right way to budget.
Do the math before the purchase
Two minutes with your rate and your expected hours will tell you whether a heater saves money or just moves the cost to another line of the bill. Nobody selling one will do that math for you.
